Dear Will,
Tonight you went to stay with Grandma Margaret for a few nights. I am excited and apprehensive at the same time. I think it's cool that you are looking forward to staying overnight away from home, but a little sad that you don't need us for everything anymore.
You are showing a real sense of humor all the time. The recent tragedy involving the kindergarten shootings struck a little too close to home. I would gladly take a bullet for you. Or 10.
Love,
Dad

Dear Will,
I can't begin to tell you how much you have grown this last four months. I am not just talking physical growth. Sure, you can reach the light switches on your own and car climb in to Mom's new car.
I am also talking about developmental growth. You have learned how to turn on the TV by yourself, buckle in to your car seat, move objects around so you can climb on them to reach higher, and ask questions in a way that sounds like you are doing what WE want, instead of what YOU want!
I continue to be amazed by you, and inspired. You and your Mother are the reasons I smile on bad days, and the future is going to be SO much fun!
Love,
Dad

Dear Will,
It is almost 5 pm, you and your Mom will be getting home soon. You are becoming an AWESOME boy. You are laughing at jokes, and showing kindness, patience, and of course, manners. Your Mom and I marvel at how fast you are growing, both physically, and socially. To you right now, there are no strangers. This worries me more than a little, because I have to introduce you to Stranger Danger soon. But I hate to. You do not know fear of others, only curiosity. I wish I did not have to instill it in you, but that is the world we live in...
On to other things. You absolutely LOVE racing! Every race I watch, even if it is for a few seconds, you ask "Is Jeff Gordon in this race?" And I love that. I have gotten in the habit of calling you "partner", but I know I need to stop. I never want to confuse the fact that I am your Dad, not your friend. Sure, I would love for us to always get along, always see the same side of things, and never disagree. But that won't happen - you have my stubbornness. So believe me, when we get along, we will - happily. But when I need to be Dad, and not look the other way when you get out of line, I will.
But I wish I won't have to.
Your Mom and I love you, and being your Dad is the single best thing I have EVER done.
Dad

Will,
It may be a cliche', but today you told me, "I want (to) be like you when I get big."
BEST. DAY. YET.
I love you, and I always will.

Dear Will,
The past two weeks, your Mom and I have seen a change in your behavior. You are resisting directions more and more. You are still basically a good boy, but your tantrums have grown quite a bit.
Having said that, I love watching you learn new things, hearing new words you learn, and watching you do more and more by yourself all the time. You are still the best thing I have ever done, and I want you to know how deeply I love you. There isn't anything I wouldn't do for you, if I needed to.
May you never grow to take for granted that you have 2 parents who love you, and who think you are the highlight to their day.
Oh, and take it easy on the chicken and fries, there are a LOT of options for food out there. Your parents get pretty sick of going to McDinners when we should be enjoying the food somewhere else...
Love you lots,
Dad
